Mitt Romney Fails to Show Why He Has Avoided Sunday Press Interviews – Except for Faux News Fox News

Not Exactly a Candidate for a Profiles in Political Courage Award

Until this past Sunday Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has refused to be interviewed by anyone other than the Republican shills at Fox News.  Presumably the reason for this was that Mr. Romney didn’t want to answer hard questions.  Now that Mr. Romney has been on Face the Nation everyone fails to see why he was avoiding these programs, because as it turns out he refused to answer questions or state an opinion on just about everything except his wife’s expensive hobby of Olympic horse something or other.

Let’s look at some of the big issues of the day.

The biggest at this time is whether or not Mr. Romney, if elected, would reverse Mr. Obama’s policy of not pursuing deportation of young adults brought to this country illegally as children by their parents, young adults who have lived exemplary lives.

Responding to the challenge that President Obama posed in his order last week to stop deporting some illegal immigrants, Mitt Romney declined to say on Sunday whether he would reverse the president’s decision if he takes up occupancy of the White House.

Here is the wishy-washy language Mr. Romney did use.

“With regards to these kids who were brought in by their parents through no fault of their own, there needs to be a long-term solution so they know what their status is,’’ Mr. Romney said on “Face the Nation” on CBS.

Wow, that’s telling it like it is.  And then there is this on his governing philosophy.

“I’m really not a guy that’s going for the next step in my political career,’’ he said. “I am in this race because I want to get America back on the right track. I don’t care about re-elections, I don’t care about the partisanship that goes on. I want to get America right.’’

Which is pretty bold coming from a man who has been running for President for almost a decade, has adopted a totally partisan position on every topic, even when it contradicted his previous positions and who is desperate to be elected President.

On the situation in Europe Mr. Romney pledged not to do something that nobody was even suggesting.

Concerning another big news story of the day, the European economic crisis, Mr. Romney said he favored a hands-off approach. “Well we’re not going to send checks to Europe,’’ he said. “We’re not going to bail out the European banks.’’

Well that's good Mr. Romney, but nobody, and we really mean nobody has ever brought up the idea that the U. S. would bail out European banks.  Were you not aware of this?

Taxes are a big part of Mr. Romney’s program, so when given the opportunity to be specific he did this.

Pressed by Mr. Schieffer to cite tax deductions and exemptions that he would cut to maintain the progressivity of the tax code, which Mr. Romney has pledged, he said, “Well, we’ll go through that process with Congress.’’

And since a sense of humor is not a Constitutional requirement to be President, not having one, as shown in this comment should not harm Mr. Romney’s chances.

Mr. Schieffer mentioned an alternative image of Mr. Romney from Saturday: the success of a dressage horse that his wife, Ann Romney, co-owns. The horse, Rafalca, won a berth on the United States Olympic team.

“I joke that I’m going to send her to Betty Ford for addiction to horses,’’ Mr. Romney said.

Uh no Mr. Romney.  The Betty Ford Clinic is for people with serious addictions.  It is not a joke, except  maybe to someone who has so much money that his wife can have a hobby of dressage.  Heck most of us think dressage is what you do when you get up in the morning.  It is certainly something that The Dismal Political Economist does, to the gratitude of everyone he works with.
