Rep. Todd Akin Just Won’t Quit in Trying to Lose a Senate Race in Missouri That Any Republican Should Be Winning

How Did This Man Ever Get Elected to Anything?

The incumbent Senator who was sure to lose in November was Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.  She was highly unpopular, the state is certain to go to Mr. Romney and all the Republicans had to do was nominate someone and stay out of the way.

But the Republicans nominated an idiotic Congressman named Todd Akin.  And he promptly committed a near fatal blunder to his campaign by saying what he really thought about rape and pregnancy.

Mr. Akin set off a storm of criticism across the political spectrum by suggesting that in cases of a “legitimate rape,” women’s bodies could ward off becoming pregnant. That comment drastically changed Mr. Akin’s fortunes. Once favored to win a seat that Republicans thought would be a sure pickup in their effort to win control of the Senate, Mr. Akin fell behind in the polls and big-time donors withdrew pledges of millions of dollars.

Now Mr. Akin may have sealed his fate by comparing Sen. McCaskill to a dog.

Speaking about Ms. McCaskill at an event in Springfield on Saturday, Mr. Akin said, “She goes to Washington, D.C., and it’s a little bit like, uh, you know, one of those dog, you know, ‘fetch.’ ”

Mitt Romney, to his credit, has withdrawn any support for Mr. Akin, and had urged him to quit.  Of course, so-called principled conservatives, like Newt Gingrich and Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina see nothing wrong here and are actively campaigning for Mr. Akin.

No, Conservatives have no shame or principles, why do you ask?
