Exhausted from the 2012 Election Season – Too Bad – 2014 Has Already Started

2016 Has Too

Yes, the ink is not yet completely dry on the newspaper copy (a reference soon to be not understood by the coming generation) of the 2012 election results when we now have the start of the 2014 Congressional campaign.  In West Virginia a leading Republican has just announced she will seek the Senate seat of the expected-to-be-retiring Jay Rockefeller.

Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia will announce a bid for the Senate on Monday, taking aim at Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Roll Call has confirmed.

Rockefeller, 75, and a West Virginia institution first elected to the Senate in 1984, is considered a top potential Senate retirement.

And in a visit to the land of Un-Reality Democrats had this reaction.

Capito’s announcement means the 2nd District seat she currently represents will become open.

National Democrats on Sunday night were already eying the seat.

“Game on,” a national Democratic operative emailed.

West Virginia is in the process of becoming a Republican stronghold.  The Democratic officeholders are really Republicans in all but name only.  Republicans are promising a return to a coal based energy system, similarly to the way they are appealing to buggy makers by promising a return to a horse and buggy transportation system.

If Senator Rockefeller does retire than Democrats can expect to lose the seat, unless of course the Republican nominee says or does something stupid.  Uh ok, so maybe the seat is not lost to Democrats.

  1. The smart analysis (i.e., here) notes that small states like West Virginia aren't terribly important in presidential elections, but are disproportionately important in Senate elections. This blog has repeatedly cautioned about the dangers of the Democrats becoming a regional party. That would mean a Republican Senate for the indefinite future.

Interestingly, a majority of West Virginians are Democrats, yet Romney won the state easily. I guess that's what happened when the whole state is dependent on a single outmoded industry.
